Wanted

Wanted (2008)
Noms: Sound Editing, Sound Mixing

Why I watched it:
1) Giving blood again and needed a movie to watch
2) They had it at the clinic and I knew it had nominated for at least one of the sound awards in 2008

Putting another one in the "fun movie" category. Kinda silly plot. The premise was totally absurd: referring to the assassins that developed out of a guild of weavers a thousand years ago. I don't want to ruin the reveal of how they get their marks for those who haven't seen it, but REALLY?! the fuck was that?

Lots of crazy effects shots and wild chase/fight sequences. Pretty creative in its craziness though - pushed the envelope pretty far in the stunts especially. Angelina Jolie is always a fun action movie star. Add in James McAvoy, one of my favorites, with an American accent and throw in Morgan Freeman being a badass. Good watching to be had. Some very memorable moments to be had for sure. There was a particularly gross sequence during the climax when Wesley (McAvoy) uses someone's head as a silencer.

The movie played a lot with time and perception, which is one of the reasons it received the sound nods, I'm sure. Changes in speed and direction of time mixed with levels of distortion probably pushed it above the usual gun slinging movie for me.

Surprise appearance: Chris Pratt as Barry. I don't actually watch Parks and Rec (yet) but I recognize him from the trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy and the hullabaloo on the internet around his physical transformation for the role.

"da fuh" moment: Wesley's second hit - the guy in the limousine. As he's flipping his car over the limousine, Wesley reprises the "I'm sorry" line from earlier in the film. I groaned out loud - not McAvoy's best moment.

Next up: I have Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and Before Sunset at home - planning to watch those with the roommates
